I am ashamed to admit it, but I hate social media. As a marketer, I know all about how valuable it is. I have read the statistics. I have seen it change the fortune of businesses almost overnight. I know how important it is, but I have been resistant to it. I hate the day in, day out aspect of it. I hate that it takes time every day to do it right. I was sitting in church this morning and my pastor was talking about the fact that there are no shortcuts in the Christian life, and I was right there with him. I totally agreed with his sermon and all of the points that he was making. And then it hit me… I was looking for shortcuts in my business life. I didn’t want to be active in social media for the same reason that I often struggle to grow in my faith… I didn’t want to put the effort in day do day.

So, I am going to change that. I am going to be methodical. I am going to do the day to day dirty work. I am going to engage with people online. I am going to keep everyone updated as to how it is going (nothing like a little bit of accountability to give me the kick in the pants that I need to make a change). So I have decided to do a 5 Week Twitter Challenge.

I chose Twitter because it is the avenue that I have avoided most. I have had an account for a long time now, and as I start writing this, I have 461 followers. However this number is artificially inflated. Over the weekend, I was pretty active on Twitter for the first time in over a year and I managed to pick up 115 new followers. I am going to set my starting numbers at what twitter analytics lists as my followers for February 19 which is 359.

The Case Study

I will spend 20-30 minutes every day on Twitter. I will not use any software. I will not buy any follows or shares. Everything I am going to do here will be done for free. Just my time and my effort. If you have a strategy that you think I should try, hit me up in the comments (or on twitter!) and if I like the idea, I may try it for a week or so.

Since this is a building up process, I am going to keep this as simple as possible, at least in the beginning. I reserve the right to research strategies, tweak, test, and refine my process as I go along, but I commit to keeping you all updated with my strategies and what has worked and what hasn’t.

What I will do week 1:

  • Add a new header photo
  • Rewrite my bio
  • Change my profile photo
  • 1-3 original tweets per day
  • Follow anyone who follows me that is even moderately connected to my business or my interests (and is not nsfw)
  • For each new follower, retweet a post if I can find one quickly that is related to my business or interests
  • Respond to retweets and mentions

So that’s it for now. I look forward to seeing how this experiment goes and keeping you all updated along the way. You can reach me in the comment section or on twitter!
