As an internet marketer, I know that my profession does not always have the best reputation. I try to have faith that there are those of us out there that try to do things right. Those of us who behave ethically and try to help businesses grow the right way. And then there are days like today when I am reminded of why people don’t always think very highly of us. I can across this ad on craigslist I took the screenshot from here, though I doubt it will be up much longer.

bad reputation marketing

Yep, as you can see, this company is trying to buy yelp reviews from well established yelpers. $25 for the review on yelp and another $25 to post the same review on other sites. And of course, it is just to help a good business to clear up a few unwarranted 1 star reviews from competitors or disgruntled ex-employees. Right… I believe that. If that were the case, and they actually deserved good reviews, they would not have to pay $25-$50 for a good review. They would simply ask their customers for the good reviews and get them.

Uggh. Things like this disgust me. I have no problem helping an establishment with their reputation (that is a big part of what we do at Two Cans), but we help our clients to engage with their actual customers. We teach them to ask for reviews and we make it easy for customers to leave reviews. We DON”T ask for or post fake reviews. Besides the fact that it is probably illegal, I couldn’t live with myself if I knew that I was helping a company to lie to its potential customers.
